Seine River Study
Seine River Survey and Restoration Planning Project
The Seine-Rat River Conservation District has recently hired Dillon Consulting
and Aquatic and Environmental Consultants (AEC) Ltd. to do a research
project on the Seine River and its' main tributaries. The SRRCD has received a grant from the Manitoba Fisheries Enhancement
Initiative to cover a large portion of the total cost. The project will commence in summer of 2003 and conclude in the fall
of 2004.
The Seine River project objectives include the compilation of
background data, current river riparian conditions and classifications,
fish habitat conditions, water quality data, fish presence, obstructions to fish migration, aerial and ground surveys,
and current land use practices
data. The initial data collection will be followed by the development
of a potential project site list and corresponding priority listing . From the list, the SRRCD will undertake specific projects in order to assist in protecting water
quality and enhancing
fish and wildlife habitat. Specific sites where the riparian corridor has
become degraded will be identified as potential SRRCD project
sites. The SRRCD will manage
all the data within their existing GIS and have an running inventory
of all projects completed within the Seine River watershed.
In addition, all the Seine River watershed past
information and data collected by Dillon Consultants, particularly the Seine River Diversion, will be
shared with the SRRCD.
The SRRCD is very appreciative of the grant received from the
Manitoba Fisheries Enhancement Initiative in order to complete
this research project and compile this kind of resource data.
The SRRCD will endeavor
to implement projects which will provide benefits to the
Seine River and the overall health of the Seine River Watershed,
Red River
Watershed,
and downstream water bodies (including Lake Winnipeg) and communities.
